What Is Artocarpus lanceifolius?

Artocarpus lanceifolius is a rare and magnificent evergreen fruit tree native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. It grows naturally in Borneo, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, and parts of Thailand. Primarily, the tree thrives in the shaded understory of lowland and hill dipterocarp forests — dense, ancient tropical jungles rich in biodiversity. It grows at elevations up to 1,000 metres above sea level. Consequently, it is perfectly adapted to warm, humid tropical climates that few other fruit trees can match.

The Keledang, as it is locally known, can reach up to 36 metres in height. Furthermore, its straight, impressive trunk rises branchless for as much as 25 metres. This makes it one of the most architecturally dramatic trees in the entire Artocarpus family. Additionally, one subspecies — Artocarpus lanceifolius subsp. clementis — is found only in north-eastern Borneo, making it a true island endemic of exceptional rarity.

Moreover, Artocarpus lanceifolius sits in a family that includes jackfruit and breadfruit, two of the world’s most celebrated tropical fruits. Yet Keledang remains far less known and far harder to obtain. Collectors across Asia, Europe, and North America actively seek its seeds for botanical gardens, private estates, and rare-fruit orchards. Induare Agro is proud to source fresh, export-quality seeds directly from Indonesia, with full Phytosanitary Certification for safe global delivery.

Aesthetic Features Artocarpus lanceifolius

Artocarpus lanceifolius is a visually stunning tree. Every part of this plant — from its glossy canopy to its textured, patterned fruit — offers something remarkable to the eye. Furthermore, its sheer scale sets it apart from most ornamental and fruit trees in cultivation.

Leaf Structure

The leaves of Artocarpus lanceifolius are smooth, glossy, and elegantly shaped. They are ovate-lanceolate in form — meaning oval at the base and tapering to a pointed tip, like a lance. Each leaf measures between 12 and 30 centimetres in length and 6 to 17 centimetres in width. Primarily, the upper leaf surface is hairless and carries a rich, deep green colour. The secondary veins — the smaller side veins branching off the central midrib — are prominent and run in 9 to 14 neat pairs across each leaf. Additionally, the stipules — small leaf-like structures at the base of each leaf stalk — wrap around the stem, clasping it tightly. This gives young branches a distinctive, layered appearance. Consequently, the foliage creates a dense, lush canopy that provides deep shade below.

Flower and Fruit

Artocarpus lanceifolius is monoecious — a term meaning that male and female flowers grow on the same tree. This is an important advantage for growers, as a single tree can produce fruit without needing a separate pollinator. Male flower heads are ellipsoid — egg-shaped — and measure 12 to 18 mm across. They grow on a short stalk called a peduncle. Furthermore, the female flower heads carry bifid styles — meaning each style, the part that receives pollen, has two branches. This structure is common in the Artocarpus family.

The fruit is a syncarp — a compound fruit made up of many small fruits fused together — growing up to 12 cm across. Its surface is covered in small, cylindrical bumps arranged in a tessellated — tile-like — pattern. Moreover, this patterned exterior gives the fruit a uniquely textured, almost sculptural appearance. Inside, the seeds are wrapped in an edible aril — a fleshy, juicy layer. The aril is sweet and white in the main subspecies. Additionally, the rarer Bornean subspecies (clementis) produces a striking orange aril, making it even more desirable among collectors.

Growth Habit and Canopy

Artocarpus lanceifolius is a genuine forest giant. It is an understorey tree in its youth — meaning it grows under the shade of taller trees in its early life. Primarily, this shade tolerance makes it easier to establish in cultivation than many other large tropical trees. As the tree matures, it rises powerfully above the canopy. Furthermore, the trunk develops short buttresses — flared, fin-like structures at the base — which anchor it firmly in tropical soils. Consequently, mature trees present an imposing, monumental presence in any garden, botanical collection, or large estate.

How to Grow Artocarpus lanceifolius

Growing Artocarpus lanceifolius from seed is deeply rewarding. Follow these steps for strong germination and healthy early growth.

Step 1 — Prepare a Rich, Well-Draining Mix Use a mix of loamy soil, perlite, and coarse sand in equal parts. Furthermore, ensure your container has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Step 2 — Sow the Seed Correctly Place the seed just beneath the soil surface, roughly 1–2 cm deep. Additionally, position it horizontally for the most even germination.

Step 3 — Maintain Warmth and Humidity Keep the temperature between 24°C and 32°C (75°F–90°F) at all times. Moreover, cover the pot with a clear plastic sheet or humidity dome to hold moisture and warmth.

Step 4 — Provide Bright, Filtered Light Place the pot in a bright spot with no direct midday sun. Primarily, filtered or dappled light matches the tree’s natural understory habitat and protects young seedlings.

Step 5 — Water Consistently Keep the soil evenly moist — never waterlogged, never fully dry. Consequently, check soil moisture every two to three days and water accordingly.

Step 6 — Feed During Active Growth Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks during the warm growing season. Furthermore, reduce feeding during cooler or slower periods.

Step 7 — Transplant into a Larger Container Once roots begin to fill the current pot, move the seedling to a larger container with fresh soil. Additionally, handle the taproot gently to avoid transplant shock.
