What Is Murraya koenigii?

Murraya koenigii — commonly known as the Curry Tree — is a small, evergreen tree from the Rutaceae family. It originates from the moist forests and tropical plains of India and Sri Lanka. Furthermore, it grows naturally across South and Southeast Asia, from Nepal and Bangladesh to Thailand and Vietnam. This plant has been used for centuries in traditional cooking and Ayurvedic medicine. Consequently, it holds a deeply respected place in global botanical heritage.

Today, genuine Murraya koenigii seeds sourced from certified growers are genuinely rare. Most commercial nurseries sell inferior stock or mislabeled varieties. Additionally, strict phytosanitary regulations in many countries limit international trade of this species. This makes a verified, export-quality seed from Induare Agro an exceptional find for serious collectors and culinary growers worldwide.

Aesthetic Features Murraya koenigii

The Murraya genus is known for elegant, aromatic plants with rich ornamental value. Murraya koenigii is no exception. It is a visually striking plant at every stage of its growth. Moreover, its beauty extends from its compound leaves to its delicate flowers and polished black fruits.

Leaf Structure

The leaves of Murraya koenigii are pinnate — meaning they are divided into multiple paired leaflets along a central stem. Each leaf typically carries 11 to 21 individual leaflets. Furthermore, each leaflet is oval, thin, and glossy with a deep, rich green colour. The leaves release a powerful, curry-like scent when touched. Primarily, this fragrance is what makes the plant so immediately recognisable and desirable. The foliage is evergreen, so the tree retains its leaves year-round in warm climates.

Flower and Fruit

Murraya koenigii produces small, white, star-shaped flowers in tight terminal clusters called panicles — that is, branching flower heads at the top of each stem. These flowers are self-pollinating and bloom irregularly throughout the year. Consequently, a single tree can produce fruit without requiring another plant nearby. The fruits are small, round to oval drupes — fleshy berries with a single seed inside. Additionally, the ripe fruits are dark blue-black in colour and mildly sweet. Each fruit contains exactly one seed, which is used for propagation.

Bark and Growth Form

The tree grows with a compact, upright form. It typically reaches 1.5 to 6 metres in height under cultivation. Moreover, the bark is dark greenish-brown and peels vertically in thin strips. Beneath the outer bark, the wood is bright white — a striking contrast that fascinates collectors. The tree grows at a moderate pace. Primarily, young trees benefit from regular pruning to encourage bushy, dense growth and more abundant leaf production.

You receive a rare plant seed and complete peace of mind in one package.

How to Grow Murraya koenigii

Step 1 — Remove the Husk Remove the outer fleshy husk from the seed before planting. The husk can inhibit germination if left on. Discard it and keep the clean inner seed.

Step 2 — Soak the Seed Soak the cleaned seed in warm water for 24 hours. This softens the seed coat and improves germination success.

Step 3 — Prepare Your Growing Mix Fill a small pot with a mix of well-draining potting compost and perlite — a lightweight volcanic mineral that improves drainage. Use equal parts of each for best results.

Step 4 — Sow the Seed Plant the seed about 1–2 cm deep in the centre of the pot. Cover lightly with perlite or fine compost. Water gently to avoid disturbing the seed.

Step 5 — Provide Warmth Place the pot in a warm location with a consistent temperature of at least 20–24°C (68–75°F). A heated propagator greatly improves results. Keep the soil moist but never waterlogged.

Step 6 — Wait for Germination Germination can take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. Patience is essential. Furthermore, fresh seeds germinate far more reliably than stored or dried seeds.

Step 7 — Move to Light Once the seedling appears, move it to a bright, sunny spot. A south-facing window or outdoor position with 6+ hours of sunlight works well. Additionally, protect young plants from strong winds and frost.

Step 8 — Ongoing Care Water regularly but allow the topsoil to dry slightly between watering. Prune the growing tips every few months. Consequently, this encourages bushy growth and more leaf production over time.
