Amorphophallus annulifer is a rare and intriguing aroid endemic to western Java, Indonesia. Although only a few collections have been documented, the species attracts attention for its unusual floral morphology, particularly the distinctive ring-like structure located at the base of its appendix. This remarkable characteristic sets it apart from many other members of the genus and makes it a species of significant botanical interest.

For collectors, researchers, and enthusiasts of tropical Araceae, Amorphophallus annulifer represents one of the lesser-known yet highly distinctive species within the genus.

The first mention of this species under the name A. muelleri by Beumée created a long-standing misapplication in herbarium collections. Later taxonomic work clarified that the true A. muelleri corresponds to a different species. To emphasize the characteristic ring-like structure at the base of the appendix, Hetterscheid established the epithet annulifer.

Morphology of Amorphophallus annulifer

Tuber

The underground tuber is subglobose and can reach approximately 10 cm in diameter. Its surface is dark brown, and the species does not produce offsets.

Leaf

A mature plant produces a solitary leaf.

The petiole reaches about 90 cm in length and approximately 2 cm in diameter. Its surface displays an intricate marbled pattern composed of dark green, medium green, and pale green shades. The upper portion gradually transitions into darker tones and bears scattered white spots. Small wart-like projections occur near the base.

The leaf blade may reach around 100 cm in diameter. Individual leaflets are elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, measuring roughly 8–15 cm long and 4–5 cm wide, with elongated acuminate to caudate tips.

Inflorescence

The inflorescence is solitary and borne on a peduncle that resembles the petiole in coloration. The peduncle varies from 66–156 cm in length.

Spathe

The spathe is broadly ovoid to triangular-ovoid and measures approximately 13–29 cm long and 14–25 cm wide.

The lower spathe forms a deep convolute tube. Externally it is pale green with both large and small brown spots, accompanied by numerous white markings. Internally it is pale green and may be smooth or slightly furrowed, with small wart-like structures near the base.

The limb is erect and broadly acute. Its exterior resembles the lower spathe but often develops a pronounced brownish-purple tint toward the margins. The inner surface is dark maroon.

Spadix

The spadix is sessile and exceeds the spathe in length, measuring approximately 22–56 cm.

Female Zone

The female zone is somewhat cylindrical and narrows gradually toward the apex. It measures approximately 3–8 cm long and 1.7–2.7 cm in diameter.

The pistils are densely packed. Ovaries are bilocular, angular, and slightly depressed in shape. Styles are short, dark maroon, and conspicuous. The stigma is shallowly two-lobed with reddish-brown conical lobes.

Male Zone

The male zone is cylindrical and gradually widens toward its upper portion, reaching approximately 3–3.5 cm in diameter.

Each male flower contains three to four stamens. The anthers open through elongated apical pores.

Appendix

The appendix forms the most distinctive feature of the species. It is elongated, fusiform-conical, inflated, hollow, and thin-walled. Its surface is granular and off-white.

The structure measures approximately 16–44 cm long and may be laterally compressed. Near the base, it may develop a pronounced ring-like expansion, which inspired the species name annulifer. The widest point generally occurs around one-third of the distance from the base.

Distribution of Amorphophallus annulifer

The first occurrence of Amorphophallus annulifer is currently known only from western Java, Indonesia. Recorded localities include the Mount Karang region and the Lengkong area of Sukabumi.

Botanical records indicate that the species remains extremely poorly documented, with only a small number of collections reported to date. This limited distribution suggests either genuine rarity or insufficient field exploration within its natural range.

Habitat

Amorphophallus annulifer inhabits secondary forests from lowland areas to lower montane elevations.

Known populations occur between approximately 200 and 1000 meters above sea level. These habitats typically provide seasonal moisture, filtered light, and organically rich forest soils that support the growth of tuberous aroids.

Taxonomic Notes

The taxonomic history of Amorphophallus annulifer is closely linked to confusion surrounding the name A. muelleri. Early herbarium specimens were frequently identified under that name, despite belonging to a different taxon.

Hetterscheid later clarified the distinction and established A. annulifer as a separate species. The chosen epithet highlights the unusual ring-like structure found at the base of the appendix, although smaller specimens may show this feature less prominently.

Morphologically, the species closely resembles Amorphophallus discophorus. However, A. discophorus possesses a characteristic disc-like structure within the middle portion of the male zone and generally attains only about half the size of A. annulifer.

Botanical Significance

Among Javan endemic aroids, Amorphophallus annulifer stands out because of its remarkable appendix morphology and highly restricted known distribution. The combination of a hollow fusiform appendix, dark maroon floral structures, and the distinctive basal ring makes it one of the most recognizable species for taxonomic study within the genus.
