Tuber and Leaves
The tuber is globose, dark brown, and approximately 3 cm in diameter. From it grows a single solitary leaf with a petiole 24-40 cm long and 0.5-1.2 cm in diameter. One of the most recognisable features of Amorphophallus angulatus is its distinctly angular (angulate) petiole – most pronounced in seedling and juvenile stages, and less obvious in mature plants. The petiole colour ranges from dirty greenish to reddish-purple.
The lamina is pseudo-radiate, 32-40 cm in diameter, with rachises that are once or twice branched and short. Leaflets are elliptic-lanceolate, 14-19 cm long and 3.5-6 cm wide. The colouration of young leaves is distinctive: rather than plain green, they are usually entirely or partly reddish-purple – making this species easy to identify in the field.
Inflorescence and Spathe
The inflorescence of Amorphophallus angulatus is short-peduncled, with the peduncle entirely hidden beneath pale greyish cataphylls measuring 2.5-4.5 cm long. The spathe is erect and elongate-elliptic, 6-17 cm long and 2.5-8 cm in diameter, with an acute apex. Its base is tightly convolute into a narrow tube with a spreading upper margin.
The outer surface of the spathe is brownish-purple with paler veins; the inner surface is slightly paler and moderately glossy. The limb bears a revolute and undulating margin that gives the flower a dramatic, sculptural appearance during anthesis.
Spadix and Appendix
The spadix is subsessile and equals the spathe in length at 6-13 cm. It is divided into three functional zones. The female zone at the base is approximately cylindrical, 0.8-2.5 cm long, with pistils laxly and irregularly arranged so that much of the axis remains visible. Above it, the male zone is cylindrical, 1.7-3.5 cm long, with flowers congested or irregularly spaced.
Crowning the spadix is the appendix — fusiform-conic, 3.8-6.5 cm long, with a smooth, glossy, pale brownish-yellow surface. It is the appendix that generates the characteristic foul smell, a clever evolutionary strategy to attract carrion-feeding insect pollinators.
Flowers and Pollen
Ovaries are slightly to clearly depressed, 1.5-2 mm in diameter, subcircular in cross-section, blackish-purple, and 2- or 3-locular. The stigma is large, dark purple, 1–1.5 mm in diameter, typically bearing 2 or 3 elongate conic projections near its centre, with a verruculate surface.
Male flowers consist of 2 or 3 stamens, elongate diamond-shaped, nearly entirely connate within one flower, and yellowish-white. Anthers are approximately 0.8 mm long with finely striate pollen.

Amorphophallus angulatus is distributed across Kalimantan (North and East Kalimantan), East Malaysia (Sarawak), and Brunei – making it largely endemic to the island of Borneo.

Habitat
In the wild, Amorphophallus angulatus grows on sandstone and shale soils. It is typically found within mixed dipterocarp forest, kerangas forest, and secondary and riverine forest environments (Ipor et al. 2012). This range of habitat types reflects the species capacity to adapt to varying soil conditions and forest canopy structures across Borneo.
Taxonomic Notes
The closest morphological relatives of Amorphophallus angulatus are A. sparsiflorus from West Malaysia and A. manta from Sumatra and West Malaysia. All three share short peduncles, erect spathes with strongly convolute, narrowly tubular bases, strongly revolute spathe limbs in larger specimens, a near absence of styles, and male flowers often aligned in vertical rows. Reddish-purplish seedling leaves are also common to all three.
Amorphophallus angulatus is distinguished from both allies by its angulate petioles – the very feature that inspired its name. In terms of size, it is comparable to A. sparsiflorus but reaches at most half the dimensions of A. manta.
