Amorphophallus asper is a rare and little-known species endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia. With its towering leaf, elongated inflorescence, and distinctive spotted petiole, this species stands among the more impressive members of the genus. Although rarely encountered, its combination of large size and restricted distribution makes it a fascinating subject for botanists, conservationists, and collectors of tropical aroids.

Morphology of Amorphophallus asper

Leaf

A mature plant produces a solitary leaf supported by a robust petiole that may reach approximately 180 cm in length and 4 cm in diameter.

The petiole displays a complex marbling pattern composed of deep dark green and medium green tones. White spots occur throughout the upper portions, while tiny pale markings appear near the center. The basal region possesses a somewhat sandy texture.

The leaf blade can reach up to 100 cm in diameter. Its rachises remain unwinged at the central branching point. Leaflets range from elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate and measure approximately 6–18 cm long and 4–8 cm wide. Their tips gradually narrow into elongated acuminate to caudate apices, while the upper surface remains medium green.

The inflorescence develops singly on a long peduncle measuring approximately 50–150 cm.

Spathe

The spathe is ovoid to triangular-ovoid and remains unconstricted. It is notably shorter than the spadix.

The lower spathe forms a convolute tube. Externally it exhibits a medium-green background decorated with small brownish spots, particularly toward the margins. The inner surface is whitish and may appear smooth or slightly furrowed, with numerous small dark brown dots concentrated near the base.

The limb stands erect with an acute apex.

Spadix

The sessile spadix exceeds the spathe in length and may reach approximately 60 cm.

Female Zone

The female zone is somewhat cylindrical and measures around 13 cm long.

Pistils occur in dense arrangement. The ovaries are subglobose and greenish. Styles are relatively short but prominent, while the stigma is shallowly two-lobed and orange in coloration.

Male Zone

The male zone is also somewhat cylindrical and reaches approximately 15 cm in length.

The anthers release pollen through elongated apical pores.

Appendix

The appendix narrows gradually toward the apex and displays a creamy ivory coloration. It may reach approximately 165 cm in length, contributing substantially to the overall height of the inflorescence.

Fruit

Observed infructescences bear compactly arranged berry-like fruits. Immature fruiting structures have been recorded in the field.

Distribution of Amorphophallus asper

The first occurrence of Amorphophallus asper is restricted to Sumatra, Indonesia. Current records indicate its presence in Bengkulu Province and Lampung Province.

As an endemic species, its known range remains relatively limited. Additional field surveys may reveal further populations, particularly in suitable forest habitats along the southern portion of the island.

Habitat

Amorphophallus asper grows in slightly open forest environments and disturbed woodland habitats. Field observations report populations occurring along roadsides leading toward Bengkulu, often at forest margins where light levels exceed those of the interior forest.

Many individuals inhabit areas adjacent to transportation corridors, suggesting some tolerance of moderate habitat disturbance.
