What Is Annona conica?

Annona conica is one of the rarest fruiting trees on Earth. It is endemic to Ecuador — meaning it grows naturally nowhere else in the world. Its native habitats are subtropical and tropical dry forests and moist lowland forests. These forests grow along riverbanks in northwestern Ecuador. Unfortunately, habitat loss has placed this species on conservation watch lists globally.

Furthermore, this species belongs to the prestigious Annonaceae family. This is the same family as cherimoya and soursop. Collectors worldwide seek Annona conica for its extraordinary rarity and its unique, cone-shaped edible fruits. Consequently, owning seeds of this plant represents a genuine botanical privilege. Additionally, it is listed under the synonym Raimondia conica in older botanical literature. This dual identity adds to its mystique among serious plant collectors.

Annona conica is not a common garden plant. It is a conservation-status species with extremely limited global availability. Induare Agro sources seeds responsibly and legally. Moreover, every seed is packed with export documentation to protect both the buyer and the plant’s wild populations.

Aesthetic Features Annona conica

Annona is a genus of tropical flowering trees known for their unusual fruits and ornamental foliage. Annona conica stands out even within this remarkable group. Its appearance is striking from leaf to fruit to flower.

Leaf Structure

Annona conica produces broad, lance-shaped leaves with a smooth, deep green surface. The leaves are large and alternate — meaning they grow one at a time along each branch. Furthermore, the underside is slightly paler, giving the canopy a two-tone, lush appearance. The tree grows to about 3 metres tall when cultivated in a garden. In the wild, it can reach up to 5 metres. Additionally, its compact size makes it ideal for container growing or small tropical gardens.

Flower and Fruit

The flowers of Annona conica are white-yellow in colour. They are small and waxy, growing directly on branches and stems. Primarily, these flowers attract bees and birds, making this tree a valuable pollinator plant. After pollination, the tree produces its most spectacular feature: long, cone-shaped yellow fruits — the trait that gives the species its name, conica. The fruits reach approximately 12 cm in height. They contain soft, white flesh with a sweet flavour. Moreover, the taste is mild and pleasant, suitable for fresh consumption, smoothies, and desserts.

Conservation Status and Rarity

Annona conica is listed as threatened due to ongoing habitat loss in Ecuador. Consequently, plants and seeds are rarely available on the international market. This scarcity drives exceptional demand among serious collectors. Furthermore, cultivating this species in home gardens or botanical collections contributes directly to its conservation. Additionally, Induare Agro supports responsible collection and legal trade of this remarkable species.

How to Grow Annona conica

Step 1 – Prepare the Seeds Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12 hours before sowing. This softens the seed coat and speeds up germination.

Step 2 – Choose the Right Soil Use a well-draining sowing mix with moderate fertility. Avoid heavy clay soils that hold too much water.

Step 3 – Sow the Seeds Place seeds just below the soil surface, about 1–2 cm deep. Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.

Step 4 – Maintain the Right Temperature Germination occurs best at around 25°C (77°F). Place the pot in a warm, sheltered spot or use a germination tray.

Step 5 – Provide Light Once sprouted, move the seedling to a position with full sun or partial shade. Furthermore, protect young plants from strong winds.

Step 6 – Water Regularly Water moderately two to three times per week. Additionally, reduce watering slightly during cooler months.

Step 7 – Transplant When Ready Transplant seedlings to a larger container or garden bed once they reach 10–15 cm in height. Moreover, choose a warm, frost-free location for best results.
