What Is Citrus hystrix?

Citrus hystrix, commonly known as Kaffir Lime or Makrut Lime, is a rare and celebrated tropical citrus tree. It originates from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and southern China are its primary native homelands. For centuries, local communities have cultivated it for food, medicine, and fragrance.

Globally, Citrus hystrix holds a unique position among rare exotic seeds. It belongs to the family Rutaceae — the same family as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. Furthermore, its species name hystrix comes from the Greek word for “hedgehog.” This name reflects its thorny stems and bumpy fruit skin. Collectors and horticulturists across Europe, North America, and Asia actively seek this plant. Consequently, authentic export-quality seeds from Indonesia are highly valued.

Induare Agro is proud to offer genuine Citrus hystrix seeds. These are sourced directly from Indonesia — one of the plant’s true native regions. Additionally, each order is fully backed by a Phytosanitary Certificate. This makes Induare Agro one of the most trusted sources for rare plants in Indonesia.

Aesthetic Features Citrus hystrix

Citrus hystrix is one of the most visually distinctive plants in the citrus world. Its appearance sets it apart from all other citrus species. Moreover, every part of this plant — from its leaves to its fruit — offers something extraordinary to the observer.

Leaf Structure

The leaves of Citrus hystrix are its most famous feature. They are called “double leaves” because of a unique trait. The leaf blade joins with a flattened, wing-like stalk — the petiole — to form a classic hourglass shape. Furthermore, these two connected sections look like two leaves growing end to end. Each leaf is dark green, glossy, and deeply aromatic. Simply rubbing the leaf surface releases a powerful citrus fragrance. Collectors prize these leaves for their beauty and their culinary value. Additionally, the leaves are a key ingredient in Thai, Indonesian, and Cambodian cooking.

The Citrus genus is home to many celebrated fruit trees. However, none display this distinctive double-leaf form as clearly as Citrus hystrix. Consequently, this leaf shape is an instant visual identifier for the species.

Flower and Fruit

Citrus hystrix produces small, star-shaped white to pink-tinged flowers. These blooms appear in clusters and carry a light, sweet fragrance. Primarily, they attract bees and other pollinators. In tropical climates like Indonesia, the tree can flower multiple times per year.

The fruit is small — roughly 4 to 6 centimetres wide. It is round and green, with a famously bumpy, wrinkled skin. Furthermore, this rough exterior contains an essential oil rich in limonene and citronellal. These compounds give the rind its intense, zesty aroma. As the fruit matures, its skin turns yellow. The fruit’s rind is used in perfumery, traditional medicine, and Southeast Asian cuisine. Additionally, the essential oil from the rind finds application in cosmetics and aromatherapy.

Growth Habit and Thorny Stems

Citrus hystrix is a thorny, evergreen shrub or small tree. In its native tropical habitat, it can reach 6 to 12 metres in height. Moreover, container-grown specimens usually stay between 1 and 1.5 metres tall. This makes it well suited to pot cultivation on patios, balconies, and in conservatories.

The tree has a crooked trunk and dense, branching stems covered in sharp thorns. Consequently, careful handling is advised when pruning or harvesting. The plant does not have a true dormancy period in tropical climates. It maintains its deep green foliage year-round. Furthermore, in cooler environments, growth simply slows during the colder months. The plant resumes vigorous growth once temperatures rise again.

How to Grow Citrus hystrix

Citrus hystrix is a rewarding plant for growers of all experience levels. Follow these simple steps to germinate and raise a healthy tree from seed.

Step 1 — Prepare Your Seeds Soak seeds in clean water for 24 hours before planting. This softens the seed coat and helps speed up germination. Remove any seeds that float, as they may not be viable.

Step 2 — Choose the Right Soil Fill a small pot with a well-draining seed-raising mix. A slightly acidic pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal. Add a little coarse sand or perlite to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Step 3 — Plant the Seeds Press each seed 1 to 1.5 cm deep into the moist soil. Cover the pot with clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome. This traps warmth and moisture — two key factors for successful germination.

Step 4 — Maintain Warmth and Moisture Place the pot in a warm location with temperatures between 22°C and 30°C (72°F to 86°F). Keep the soil lightly moist at all times. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil causes seed rot.

Step 5 — Wait for Germination Seeds typically germinate within 2 to 4 weeks. Consequently, be patient and maintain steady warmth. Remove the plastic cover once seedlings appear above the soil surface.

Step 6 — Provide Sunlight Move your seedling to a bright location with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Additionally, a south-facing window works well for indoor growers. Outdoor placement in a warm, sheltered spot is ideal.

Step 7 — Transplant When Ready Transplant seedlings into a larger pot once they reach 10 cm in height. Furthermore, use a rich, well-draining citrus potting mix. Feed monthly with a balanced citrus fertilizer during the growing season.
