What Is Dimocarpus longan?

Dimocarpus longan is a tropical fruit tree with a history stretching back more than 2,000 years. It belongs to the Sapindaceae family — the same family as lychee and rambutan. The species is native to Southeast Asia and southern China. Primarily, its origins trace to the mountain range between Myanmar and southern China. Furthermore, it has been cultivated in China since at least 200 BC, when emperors requested the tree be planted in palace gardens.

Today, the longan grows widely across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, and beyond. Consequently, China, Thailand, and Vietnam together produce around 95% of the world’s longan fruit. The name “longan” comes from the Cantonese words for “dragon eye.” This name refers to the fruit’s appearance when peeled — the dark seed shows through the pale flesh like a pupil in an eye. Additionally, the species holds deep cultural significance in Chinese tradition. It has long been used as both a food source and in traditional herbal medicine.

Induare Agro sources fresh longan seeds directly from verified Southeast Asian growers. Furthermore, every seed ships with full export documentation. This gives collectors and home growers a simple, legal, and reliable path to growing this iconic tree anywhere in the world.

Aesthetic Features Dimocarpus longan

Dimocarpus longan is a handsome, evergreen tree with a strong, spreading canopy. In the wild, it can grow up to 40 metres tall. In cultivation and home gardens, it typically reaches 9–12 metres. Consequently, it works well as both a fruit tree and a shade tree. The trunk is thick and covered in rough, grey-brown bark. The branches spread wide and droop slightly at the tips, giving the tree a full and graceful shape.

Leaf Structure

The leaves of Dimocarpus longan are compound — meaning each leaf contains several smaller leaflets. Primarily, each leaf holds 4 to 10 pairs of leaflets arranged opposite each other. Each leaflet is long and narrow, measuring 10–20 cm in length. Furthermore, the upper surface is smooth, glossy, and dark green. The underside is paler and slightly hairy. New growth is particularly eye-catching — young leaves emerge in a deep wine-red or bronze color before turning green. Additionally, the leaf edges are slightly wavy, adding texture to the overall appearance.

Flowers and Fruit

The flowers of Dimocarpus longan are small and pale yellow to white. They grow in large, branched clusters — called panicles — at the tips of branches. Furthermore, the tree produces male flowers, female flowers, and bisexual flowers on the same tree. Flowering typically occurs in spring, following a cool dry period in winter. Consequently, a defined cool season greatly improves flowering and fruit set.

The fruit is round and smooth. It ripens to a yellow-brown color. Furthermore, the skin is thin, leathery, and easy to peel. Inside, the flesh is white and almost see-through. It is juicy, mildly sweet, and has a subtle floral scent. Additionally, the flesh contains antioxidants, vitamin C, and polysaccharides — natural compounds linked to immune support and antioxidant activity. Each fruit holds a single dark, round, glossy seed. Primarily, this seed is the product offered by Induare Agro — fresh, viable, and ready to grow.

Growth Habit and Seasonality

Dimocarpus longan is an evergreen tree. It keeps its leaves throughout the year. Consequently, it provides shade and greenery in all seasons. The tree is a slow grower in its early years. Furthermore, it typically spends its first several years building a strong root system and canopy before it begins to fruit. Additionally, fruit production improves with age. Mature trees can produce large and consistent harvests every year.

How to Grow Dimocarpus longan

Dimocarpus longan grows best in warm, tropical, and subtropical climates. Furthermore, growers in containers and home gardens can succeed with the right care. Follow these steps for the best chance of germination and strong early development.

Step 1 — Use Fresh Seeds Plant the seed as soon as possible after receiving it. Additionally, longan seeds lose the ability to sprout quickly after harvest, so timing matters.

Step 2 — Seed Preparation Remove any remaining fruit flesh from the seed surface. Rinse it clean with water. Furthermore, soak the seed in warm water (25–30°C) for 24 hours before planting.

Step 3 — Growing Medium Use a rich, well-draining mix: 50% potting soil, 30% coarse sand or perlite, and 20% compost. Consequently, this provides good drainage and the nutrients the seedling needs in its early stage.

Step 4 — Sowing Plant the seed 2–3 cm deep in a pot with drainage holes. Place the flat side of the seed facing down. Furthermore, keep the soil consistently moist — but never waterlogged — throughout the sprouting stage.

Step 5 — Temperature Maintain a temperature between 25°C and 32°C for best germination results. Primarily, warm and stable warmth is the most important condition for this species to sprout successfully.

Step 6 — Light Place the pot in bright, indirect light once the seedling appears. Additionally, move it into full sun gradually as the plant grows stronger over the following weeks.

Step 7 — Watering Water regularly during active growth. Let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry slightly between waterings. Furthermore, never allow the pot to sit in standing water, as root rot is the most common cause of seedling failure.

Step 8 — Transplanting Move the seedling to a larger pot or garden bed once it reaches 20–25 cm in height. Consequently, more root space allows faster growth and earlier fruiting. Additionally, longan trees fruit best in full sun with well-drained soil.

Step 9 — Long-Term Care Apply a balanced organic fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) every 6–8 weeks during the growing season. Furthermore, a cool and dry period in winter encourages the tree to flower and fruit more reliably each year.
