What Is Mangifera laurina?

Mangifera laurina is a rare and ancient mango species native to tropical Asia. It grows wild in the humid lowland rainforests of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Scientists first formally described it in 1850. Today, it remains one of the least cultivated mango relatives in the world.

The species name laurina comes from Latin. It means “similar to the bay laurel,” describing the shape of its distinctive leaves. Locally, people call it mangga pari or mangga kopyor in Indonesian. In English, it is also known as Water Mango or Egg Mango. Furthermore, it goes by mango de agua in Spanish-speaking botanical circles.

This tree holds a privileged place in mango history. Researchers believe it entered cultivation long before Mangifera indica — the common mango — was introduced to the region. Consequently, Mangifera laurina represents one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees in Malesia. Additionally, it is now prized in plant science for its strong resistance to anthracnose — a damaging fungal disease — making it valuable for mango breeding programs worldwide.

Today, wild and semi-cultivated populations survive mainly in Borneo, Sumatra, and parts of peninsular Malaysia. The tree is increasingly rare in Java and Peninsular Malaysia. Moreover, outside Southeast Asia, few collectors have ever grown one. Primarily for this reason, authentic seeds are exceptionally difficult to source. Induare Agro is one of the very few suppliers offering export-quality Mangifera laurina seeds with full legal documentation.

Aesthetic Features Mangifera laurina

Mangifera laurina is a bold, majestic tree. Its physical form commands attention. Furthermore, its features set it apart from common mango varieties at every stage of growth.

Leaf Structure

The leaves of Mangifera laurina are elliptic-lanceolate — meaning long, narrow, and pointed at the tip — typically 6 to 24 cm long and 2 to 6 cm wide. They are leathery and smooth in texture. Moreover, the upper surface is a deep, glossy green, while the underside is a paler, lighter green.

The leaf shape closely resembles that of the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis). This unique resemblance is the origin of the species name. Additionally, the leaves grow in alternate arrangement along the branches, clustering toward the tips. The petioles — the short stalks that attach each leaf to the branch — are slender and 2 to 5 cm long. Consequently, the canopy has an elegant, layered appearance that many collectors find immediately striking.

Flower and Fruit

Mangifera laurina produces large, open flower clusters called panicles — branching spray-like arrangements of many small blooms. These panicles grow at or near the branch tips and reach 10 to 40 cm in length. The flowers themselves are small, fragrant, and whitish-green to pale yellow in colour. Primarily, flowering is triggered by any short dry spell, making this species uniquely responsive to seasonal changes.

The fruit is a drupe — a fleshy, stone fruit — shaped like a small mango. It grows 5 to 10 cm long and 4 to 8 cm wide. At maturity, the skin turns a pale yellowish-green. The flesh inside is yellow, soft, and juicy. Furthermore, the pulp liquefies fully as the fruit ripens. This means the juice can be sucked out directly — a traditional treat for children across Borneo and Sumatra. More often, the fruit is harvested immature and sliced into fruit salads with spicy sauce, a dish locally called rujak.

The seed inside is polyembryonic — meaning one seed can produce multiple seedlings. This is a major advantage for collectors and growers.

Tree Size and Crown

Mangifera laurina is a large canopy tree. It grows up to 25 to 36 metres tall in its natural habitat. The trunk can reach 80 to 150 cm in diameter in mature specimens. Additionally, the bark is brown and slightly rough. The branches angle upward and form a thick, dense, globe-shaped crown that casts deep shade.

Furthermore, the tree is evergreen — it keeps its leaves year-round. This makes it a strong structural tree for tropical gardens, botanical collections, and agroforestry projects. Induare Agro supplies seeds from healthy, verified parent trees with these outstanding characteristics.

How to Grow Mangifera laurina

Mangifera laurina is a tropical species. It grows best in warm, humid conditions. Follow these steps to give your seeds the best start.

Step 1: Prepare Your Growing Medium Use a well-draining, slightly acidic growing mix. A combination of coco peat and perlite works well. Fill a deep pot with this mix and moisten it before planting.

Step 2: Plant the Seed Place the seed flat in the pot, just below the surface — about 1 to 2 cm deep. Do not bury it too deep. Remember, this is a polyembryonic seed and may produce more than one seedling.

Step 3: Provide Warmth and Humidity Keep the pot in a warm location with temperatures above 20°C (68°F). Cover the pot loosely with a plastic bag or humidity dome to retain moisture. Additionally, keep the growing medium consistently damp but never waterlogged.

Step 4: Wait for Germination Germination typically occurs within 2 to 4 weeks. Furthermore, multiple shoots may emerge from a single seed. Allow them to establish before separating.

Step 5: Provide Bright Light Once shoots appear, move the seedling to a bright location with indirect sunlight. Primarily, avoid harsh midday sun in the early seedling stage. Gradually increase light exposure over several weeks.

Step 6: Transplant and Establish When the seedling reaches 15 to 20 cm tall, transplant it into a larger container or directly into the ground in a tropical or subtropical climate. Moreover, ensure good drainage at all times to prevent root rot.
