Hidden within the sandy peat forests of West Kalimantan and Sarawak grows one of the most morphologically distinctive members of its genus. Amorphophallus infundibuliformis Hett., A. Dearden & A. Vogel holds a singular distinction: it is the only species in the entire genus known to carry uncinate (hook-shaped) staminodes on the lower portion of its appendix. Hetterscheid, Dearden, and Vogel formally described it in 1994 in the journal Blumea. Its small, funnel-shaped inflorescence belies the complexity of its floral architecture. For aroid enthusiasts and plant ecologists, this species represents a fascinating example of extreme morphological specialization in a highly specific and fragile ecosystem.

Amorphophallus infundibuliformis belongs to the family Araceae. Hetterscheid, Dearden & Vogel described it in Blumea 39 (1994): 259. No synonyms are currently recognized for this species.


Morphological Description

Tuber and Leaf

The tuber of Amorphophallus infundibuliformis is depressed-globose to subglobose and pinkish in color. It produces no offset structures. The plant bears a single solitary leaf. The petiole surface is dirty whitish and carries numerous confluent, irregular green spots along with scattered, more or less raised white dots. The petiole top develops into an intercalary bulbil. Leaflets are elongate-elliptic and long-acuminate, with numerous small undulations on the margin. Their main veins are impressed. The upper surface is green and moderately glossy.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus infundibuliformis is short-peduncled. The peduncle measures approximately 4 cm long and about 0.8 cm in diameter at the base. It is hidden within the cataphylls. In fruit, the peduncle lengthens considerably.

Spathe

The spathe is funnel-shaped (infundibuliform) and strongly convolute in its lower half. In side view it is obconic, and in front view it is transversely orbicular-elliptic. It measures approximately 6 cm long and about 8 cm in diameter, and terminates in a very widely acute apex. Internally, the lower half of the base is dark maroon. The inner base surface carries strong, longitudinal ridges.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix of Amorphophallus infundibuliformis is sessile and obliquely inserted, slightly longer than the spathe. The female zone is oblique and very short-cylindric, 0.5–1 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter. Flowers in the female zone are congested. The male zone is cylindric with an oblique base, 0.8–1.3 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter. Flowers in the male zone are congested and partly ridge-like in arrangement.

The appendix is cylindric and obtuse. It reaches up to 6.5 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter. The appendix is entirely and densely covered by staminodes. In the lower third of the appendix, these staminodes are shortly conical to aristate, and sometimes uncinate (hooked). Some carry long, narrowly decurrent, ridge-like bases. Moving upward, the staminodes become shorter or reduce to only their basal portion, reaching up to 2 mm in length. The color of the appendix is whitish overall.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is depressed, irregular to cubic, and angulate in cross-section. It measures 0.9–1.5 mm in diameter and 1.2–1.5 mm tall. The color is reddish-brown, becoming maroonish near the style insertion. Each ovary is unilocular. The style is either absent or only basiscopically developed. The stigma is sessile or partly sessile and acroscopically orientated. It is reniform in shape, with a shallow central depression and one conic lobe on the outward-facing margin. It measures 0.8–1 mm in diameter and 0.3–0.5 mm tall. Its color is dark greyish-brown. The surface is densely verruculate.

Male Flowers

Male flowers fuse upward into longitudinal chains. Otherwise, each flower carries 3–5 stamens. Stamens measure 1–1.3 mm in diameter and approximately 0.7 mm in length. They are rounded, oval or irregular in cross-section, and white. Filaments are absent or nearly so, and entirely connate. Anthers are truncate. Pores are apical, rounded or elongate, and confluent.

Fruit

The infructescence is short and cylindric-fusiform, reaching up to 10 cm long and 7 cm in diameter. Berries are elongate and slightly conic, reaching up to 1.8 cm long and 1 cm in diameter near the base. Their apex is truncate. Color is orange-red at maturity, and each berry is single-seeded.

Distribution of Amorphophallus infundibuliformis

Amorphophallus infundibuliformis occurs in West Kalimantan (Indonesia) and in East Malaysia (Sarawak). Its distribution thus spans the international border that divides the island of Borneo between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Habitat

This species grows exclusively on sandy peat podzols at altitudes of 250–975 m. It occurs under moist to perhumid hill to upper-hill mixed dipterocarp forest at lower altitudes, transitioning to oak-dipterocarp forest at higher elevations. In both cases, the underlying substrate is sandstone. This strict association with sandy peat podzols over sandstone makes A. infundibuliformis one of the more ecologically specialized Bornean aroids (pers. comm. P. Boyce).


Taxonomic Notes

Amorphophallus infundibuliformis holds a unique position in the genus. No other species in the entire genus carries uncinate (hook-shaped) staminodes on the lower portion of its appendix. Consequently, this single character immediately identifies the species without the need for comparison with any other taxon. Furthermore, its funnel-shaped spathe with a very widely acute limb and its strongly ridged spathe base interior add additional diagnostic value. Together, these features make A. infundibuliformis one of the most morphologically distinctive members of the Bornean aroid flora.

One feature immediately sets Amorphophallus hirsutus Teijsm. & Binn. apart from nearly all its relatives: the upper portion of its appendix carries dense, short bristles — a character found in virtually no other species in the genus. Teijsmann and Binnendijk formally described it in 1862 in the Natuurkundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch-Indië. This distinctive aroid grows in a variety of disturbed habitats across West Sumatra and the Andaman Islands of India. Morphological Description

Tuber and Leaf

The tuber of Amorphophallus hirsutus is depressed-globose, reaching up to approximately 12 cm in diameter and 8 cm in height. It is dark brown and produces no offsets. The plant normally bears a single solitary leaf, though two leaves occasionally develop together.

The petiole reaches up to about 100 cm in length and approximately 4 cm in diameter. Its surface is largely smooth, though the base sometimes becomes slightly rugose. The background color is bright pale green. Near the base, the surface is almost entirely covered by tiny blackish-green dots. These dots become slightly or distinctly larger and whitish higher up the petiole. Toward the end of the growing season, the petiole top transforms into an intercalary bulbil.

The lamina reaches approximately 1 m in diameter and is highly dissected. Its rachises carry wings throughout their length, though these wings narrow toward the bases. Leaflets are elongate-elliptic, 7–35 cm long and 2.5–7 cm wide, and acuminate at the tip. In seedlings, the lamina divides into 5–7 parts. Young plants may carry leaflets with a purplish flush or shimmer and bright lilac-purple margins. However, these purplish tones disappear as the plant matures.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus hirsutus is solitary and short-peduncled. The peduncle measures 4–10 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter. It is plain green or carries a few scattered whitish ring-like spots. In fruit, the peduncle greatly elongates, reaching up to approximately 35 cm.

Spathe

The spathe is campanulate and broadly triangular-oval, 14–25 cm long and 16–29 cm in diameter. It is acute at the apex and slightly constricted between the base and the limb. The margin is undulate. Externally, the base is plain green or carries small blackish spots. The outer limb surface is dark purplish-brown. Internally, the limb and base surfaces match the exterior, though slightly glossier and paler toward the base. The inner base surface is dark maroon and ridged-verrucate, with verrucae in a ridge-like arrangement.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix of Amorphophallus hirsutus is sessile and shorter than the spathe, measuring 8–22 cm in length and approximately 1 cm in diameter. The female zone is nearly cylindric, 1.5–6 cm long and approximately 2.5 cm wide. Its flowers are congested or slightly distant. The male zone is strongly obconic, 2–6 cm long, 0.7–1 cm in diameter at the base, and 2–4 cm at the top. Flowers in the male zone are congested.

The appendix is 4–10 cm long and 4–10 cm in diameter. Its lower portion is subglobose, wrinkled, and rugulose-areolate. The upper portion abruptly attenuates into a truncate, cylindric to conic knob. This knob carries a dense covering of short bristles 1–2.5 mm long — the character that gives the species both its name and its most reliable diagnostic feature. The overall appendix color is pale purplish.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is depressed-globose and more or less angulate in cross-section. It measures 3–3.5 mm in diameter and 2–2.5 mm tall. Each ovary is 2–3-locular, pale green, with a maroon upper portion. The style is slender, 6–7 mm long and 1.2–1.3 mm in diameter, and maroon. The stigma is large and oval in cross-section, cordate in longitudinal section, measuring 3 × 2 mm and approximately 2 mm tall. It is dirty greyish and strongly 2- or 3-lobed, with conic, acutish lobes that often diverge. The surface is verruculate.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries approximately 4 stamens. Stamens reach approximately 2 mm in length. Filaments are 0.1–0.3 mm long and connate. Anthers measure 1.7–1.9 mm long and 1.5–2.5 mm in diameter, dirty yellowish-white in color. The connective is broad and slightly to strongly raised, sometimes carrying a short conical process. After anthesis, a longitudinal groove appears on the connective. Pores are apical and elongate.

Fruit

The infructescence is long-peduncled, with a cylindric fruiting portion bearing distant berries. Berries are ovate and orange-red.


Distribution of Amorphophallus hirsutus

Amorphophallus hirsutus occurs in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and in the Andaman Islands of India. This disjunct distribution — spanning both the Malay Archipelago and the Indian Ocean island chain — makes it one of the more biogeographically interesting members of the genus.

Amorphophallus hirsutus resembles A. paeoniifolius in overall inflorescence shape. Both species share a similar campanulate spathe form and a broadly expanded appendix structure. Nevertheless, one character immediately separates them: A. hirsutus carries dense short bristles on the apex of its appendix knob. A. paeoniifolius entirely lacks this feature. Consequently, any specimen displaying a bristled appendix apex belongs to A. hirsutus rather than its morphological counterpart.

Hooker formally described this limestone-dwelling species in 1893 in the Flora of British India. It grows on limestone outcrops in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand. Two features make it uniquely identifiable in the genus: a clavate, blood-colored appendix and transverse ridges on the inner surface of the spathe base — a character combination found in no other congener. Morphological Description

Tuber and Leaf

The tuber of Amorphophallus haematospadix is depressed-globose to subglobose, measuring 2–12 × 2–9 cm. It produces a few annual offsets. These offsets are globose, fusiform, or obovate and measure 5–2 cm. The plant bears a single solitary leaf. The petiole is uniformly green or olive-green, smooth, and measures 50–85 cm long by 1–3 cm wide.

The leaf blade reaches 60–80 cm in diameter. Its rachises are broadly winged, except for the most proximal portions. Leaflets are lanceolate, 7–26 × 2–6.5 cm, acuminate, and leathery in texture. Their upper surface is dark green and moderately glossy. Venation is very dense, with secondary veins very closely spaced — a distinctive vegetative feature of this species.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus haematospadix is long-pedunculate. The peduncle appearance matches the petiole in color and texture, measuring 17–40 cm long by approximately 8 mm wide.

Spathe

The spathe is elongate-triangular, 8–21 cm long and 4–7 cm wide, and apiculate at the apex. The limb margins are strongly reflexed. Both the inner and outer limb surfaces are creamy to yellowish-white. The outer base transitions to a creamy or yellowish-white surface that becomes suffused with pale purplish-green toward the base. The interior of the spathe base is dark purple. Importantly, the base interior carries transverse ridges, with small punctiform warts between them. This combination of transverse ridges is unique within the genus and provides a reliable identification character for the species.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix of Amorphophallus haematospadix is sessile. It is slightly longer than the spathe, measuring 9–22.5 cm. Occasionally the spadix may be slightly shorter. The pistillate (female) flower zone is shortly cylindrical, 7–10 cm long and 6–15 cm wide. Its flowers are congested.

The staminate (male) flower zone is cylindrical to slightly obconical, 7–15 × 1.3–2.5 cm. It also carries congested flowers. Staminate flowers carry 3–4 stamens each, and the stamens are dull dark blackish-purple.

The appendix is cylindrical-clavate, 8–19.5 × 1–2 cm. Its basal half is terete. The upper half is slightly fusiform and slightly laterally compressed, with a rounded apex. The color is glossy or dull reddish to dark greyish-black. A faint reddish-purple hue appears at the base. Additionally, the base bears several diamond-shaped, flattened staminodes. Some of these carry a small conical process.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is globose, measuring 2.5 × 2.5 mm, and creamy white in color. The style is slender, 2–3 mm long and 0.5 mm wide, and reddish-brown. The stigma is subglobose, 0.5 × 0.6–0.8 mm. It is entire or slightly bilobed, verruculose, and dark grey with rounded lobes.

Male Flowers

Male flowers carry 3–4 stamens each. Stamens are dull dark blackish-purple in color. No further detail on anther dimensions appears in the available protologue description.

Distribution of Amorphophallus haematospadix

Amorphophallus haematospadix grows in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula (West Malaysia) and in southern Thailand. A specimen in the Kew herbarium, collected under the name Sander s.n., also suggests a possible occurrence in North Sumatra. However, no additional material from Sumatra currently confirms this. As a result, the Sumatran presence remains unverified and cannot be fully ruled out.

Habitat

This species grows on limestone. It favors the alkaline, often coastal karst environments typical of Peninsular Thailand and West Malaysia. Its strict limestone substrate preference places it in the same ecological guild as other limestone-specialist aroids found throughout insular Southeast Asia.


Taxonomic Notes

Amorphophallus haematospadix stands out clearly among Indonesian and Malesian aroids. Researchers recognize it by two features that occur together in no other species in the genus. First, the appendix is clavate and distinctively red to dark reddish-purple in color. Second, the inner surface of the spathe base carries unique transverse ridges. These two characters together allow instant field identification when the inflorescence appears.

Furthermore, a specimen at the Kew herbarium annotated as imported from Sumatra in June 1983 raises the possibility that the species may also occur in North Sumatra. However, Hetterscheid and Ittenbach (1996) noted that no additional confirming material exists. Consequently, the species distribution remains provisionally limited to the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand, with Sumatra treated as uncertain.

Morphological Description

The tuber of Amorphophallus gigas is depressed-globose. Reports indicate it can weigh up to 70 kg, making it one of the heaviest tubers in the plant kingdom. It produces no annual offsets. The plant bears a single solitary leaf per growing season.

The petiole is impressive, reaching 3–3.5 metres in length and 11–12 cm in diameter. Its surface is smooth or slightly rugose near the base, and dark green with numerous large and small, rounded to elongate-oval, pale green spots. The lamina grows to at least 3 metres in diameter. Its rachises carry broad wings distally. Leaflets are elongate-elliptic and long-acuminate, with an acumen 3–3.5 cm long. They measure 13–25 cm long and 5–9 cm in diameter.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus gigas is long-peduncled and reportedly reaches up to 4.36 metres in total height. The peduncle alone extends 2–2.5 metres in length. Its surface pattern matches the petiole. This extraordinary peduncle height, combined with the long spadix, places A. gigas among the tallest flowering structures of any non-branched inflorescence known to science.

Spathe

The spathe is campanulate, erect, and broadly ovate, measuring 55–60 cm in length. Externally, the base is dark olive-green with obscure ring-like, paler spots. The upper portion transitions from dark green to pale green, with a dark red-brown margin. Internally, the base is pale green with reddish-brown spots and reddish veins. The margin is plicate-sinuous, and all veins are strongly raised. The entire inner surface carries a bold, sculptured appearance.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix of Amorphophallus gigas is sessile and longer than the spathe, reaching approximately 150 cm in length. The female zone is slightly obconic and approximately 7.5 cm long. Its flowers are well-spaced and distant from one another. The male zone is strongly obconic, approximately 2 cm long, with congested flowers.

The appendix is elongate-conic, acute to obtuse at the apex, and reaches approximately 140 cm in length and 25 cm in diameter. Its surface is pale brownish. This enormous appendix, which acts as a heat source to volatilize scent compounds, gives the species much of its impressive visual stature.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is globose to slightly ovate, with a flattened base. It measures approximately 4 mm in diameter and 3.5–4 mm tall. In cross-section it is circular to subangular, and bilocular to trilocular, with one basal ovule per locule. The style is elongate and slender, tapering toward the stigma. Its base is sometimes slightly thickened, and an articulation sits at 7 mm from the base. The style measures 2–3 (–3.5) mm long and approximately 1.5 mm in diameter at the base, tapering to about 1 mm at the top. It is laterally compressed. The stigma is small and shallowly bilobed, slightly laterally compressed, approximately 1 × 1.4 mm in diameter and about 1 mm tall. Its surface is minutely rugulose, with rounded lobes.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries 3–5 stamens. Stamens reach 4 mm in length. Filaments are short, approximately 1 mm long, and basally connate. Anthers are approximately 3 mm long and 2–2.5 (–3) mm in diameter. They are subrectangular in cross-section with a subtruncate top. A longitudinal groove runs across the connective. Pores are apical and elongate before anthesis, approximately 0.5 mm long.

Fruit and Seed

Berries are one- or two-seeded. They begin green, then turn yellow, followed by orange, and finally a fiery red at full maturity. One-seeded berries measure 1.3–1.6 cm long and 0.8–0.9 cm wide. Two-seeded berries measure up to 1.2 cm wide. In shape, they are obovate (one-seeded) or broadly conic and laterally flattened (two-seeded). The base is truncate and broadly subacute. The style scar is rounded, with no style remnant remaining.

Seeds are elongate-elliptic and flattened on one side. The rhaphe is distinct. Seeds measure 1.1–1.2 cm long and 0.7 cm in diameter. The seed coat is shallowly rugose, predominantly blackish or greyish-black, variously marked with yellowish-brown small spots that may be confluent.


Distribution of Amorphophallus gigas

Amorphophallus gigas is endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia. Within Sumatra, it grows across a range of elevations and secondary forest types, though it does not occur outside the island.

Habitat

This species favors secondary forests, particularly in open canopy gaps on slopes. Young plants often grow gregariously in clusters, while older individuals tend to be solitary and isolated. Taxonomic Notes

In overall morphology, Amorphophallus gigas closely resembles A. decus-silvae from West Java. Both species share very similar vegetative architecture and inflorescence structure, and both reach extraordinary dimensions. Nevertheless, several consistent floral differences separate them reliably. A. decus-silvae produces smaller stigmas, longer and more slender styles, shorter stamens, and anthers with very obtuse angles and rounded pores — in contrast to the characters seen in A. gigas. The tuber of Amorphophallus eburneus is depressed-globose. It reaches up to about 35 cm in diameter and up to 20 cm in height. Mature tubers weigh up to approximately 7 kg. The skin is pale greyish-brown, corky in texture, and divided into numerous small, angulate fields by narrow grooves. The tuber produces no offset structures. The plant bears a single solitary leaf.

The petiole is very turgid, reaching up to approximately 120 cm long and 10 cm in diameter. Its surface is smooth and uniformly pale green, occasionally carrying a few scattered whitish-greenish spots. The lamina is moderately dissected, up to about 240 cm in diameter. Its rachises carry wings only from the distal basal branchings outward. Leaflets are elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, 12–60 cm long and 5.5–21 cm wide. They are mid to pale green, coriaceous, and long-acuminate at the apex.

Inflorescence and Cataphylls

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus eburneus is short-peduncled. It is largely hidden within a cluster of approximately six cataphylls. These cataphylls are lanceolate, pale olive-brown to whitish-greenish with pale brownish flushes. The largest reach up to about 35 cm long and 10 cm in diameter.

The peduncle measures 15–20 cm long and approximately 2.5 cm in diameter. It is pale green and entirely concealed by the surrounding cataphylls.

Spathe

The spathe is erect and infundibuliform-ovate. At the base it is strongly convolute and hidden by cataphylls. A shallow constriction separates the base from the limb. The limb is slightly spreading and acute, with revolute margins, measuring 20–23 cm long and 19–21 cm in diameter.

Externally, the spathe surface is creamy white. The upper margins sometimes show faint purple flushing. Internally, the base is dark purple and then creamish. The limb interior is creamish with or without a pale purple flush. The interior of the base carries numerous irregular, shallow warts and some shallow grooves.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix of Amorphophallus eburneus slightly exceeds the spathe in length. It is shortly stipitate and measures 21–26 cm in total. The female zone is slightly conic, 2.5–3 cm long and 2–2.5 cm in diameter. Its flowers are slightly or variably spaced.

The male zone is cylindric, 4–5 cm long and 1.5–2 cm in diameter. Flowers in this zone are congested. Furthermore, the appendix measures 14–18 cm long and 1.5–3 cm in diameter. It is terete or laterally compressed and acute. The color is creamish, turning pale yellowish during male anthesis. The surface is rugulose with scattered, short, shallow grooves. Notably, the appendix emits a smell of fish during both female and male anthesis.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is depressed-pyriform to oblong, 2.5–4 mm in diameter and 4–5 mm tall. It is unilocular, or rarely bilocular. The apex divides into three narrow lobes. The base is white or pale green, while the remainder is dark purple. The stigma is thin and strongly sinuous. It is stellate and approximately bilobed, partly sunken between the three ovary lobes. Its surface is densely scaberulate and dirty greyish with purple hues. It measures 1.5–2.5 mm in diameter and 0.5–1 mm tall, and is approximately quadrangular in cross-section.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries 4–6 stamens. These often run elongate and parallel to the spadix axis, connate with flowers above and/or below. Stamens reach approximately 1 mm in length and 1–2 mm in diameter. Filaments are approximately 0.5 mm long and connate. Anthers measure approximately 0.5 mm long. They are free or connate, and truncate to subtruncate. Pores are apical, free or connected within a flower or between flowers, and then irregularly elongate.

Fruit and Seed

Berries are very large and elongate, slightly angulate, approximately 4.5 × 2 cm, red, and single-seeded. Seeds are elongate-conical, approximately 3.5 cm long and 1.2 cm in diameter at the germination point, tapering to 0.7 cm at the opposite end. The seed skin is brownish.


Distribution of Amorphophallus eburneus

Amorphophallus eburneus occurs in Kalimantan (possibly West Kalimantan) and in East Malaysia (Sarawak). Its distribution within Sarawak centers on the Padawan and Tebedu areas, where it grows on karst limestone. The species appears to be strictly tied to limestone substrates across its range.

Habitat

They are long-acuminate at the apex, with a base that is abrupt and long-decurrent.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus discophorus is solitary and long-peduncled. The peduncle reaches 80–150 cm in length and shares the same surface texture and coloration as the petiole.

Spathe

The spathe is ovate, 15–20 cm long and 7.5–14 cm in diameter. Its apex is acute to obtuse and sometimes shortly apiculate. The outer base surface is dull dark green with scattered whitish dots. The upper outer portion transitions to dirty greyish-purple with faint, scattered, paler dots and a darker margin. Internally, the base is pale yellowish-green. A narrow zone of purple follows, covered by a distinct greyish waxy layer. The limb interior is glossy dark maroon. The base interior carries small, conical, obtuse warts.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix of Amorphophallus discophorus is sessile. It is shorter than, or only slightly longer than, the spathe, measuring 14–20 cm in length. The female zone is cylindric, 3–4 cm long and approximately 1.5 cm in diameter, with congested flowers.

The male zone is obconic and carries a central disciform swollen part — the distinctive disc that gives the species its name. This zone measures 2–2.5 cm in length. At the base it is approximately 1 cm in diameter, and at the top approximately 1.3 cm. The disc itself reaches about 2 cm in diameter. Its top presses against the base of the appendix. Flowers in the male zone are congested.

The appendix is sessile and elongate-conic, with a truncated base. It expands broadly in an annuliform and concave manner, measuring 10–15 cm in length and 2–3.5 cm in diameter at the middle. Its surface is verruculate. The color is cream, yellowish-green, or dirty purple with a yellowish base. The apex is obtuse to acute. Notably, the appendix produces a heavy gas-like odor during female anthesis.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is depressed to obovate in shape and subcircular to angulate in cross-section. It measures 3–4 mm in diameter and approximately 2 mm tall, depressed at the center. The lower half is yellowish-green, while the upper half is blackish-purple with a grooved surface. Each ovary is bilocular, with one basal ovule per locule. The style is 1–2 mm long and approximately 1 mm in diameter at the base. It is dark purple. The stigma is conical and obtuse, approximately 1 mm tall and 1 mm in diameter. It is bright yellow or brown, shallowly bilobed, with obtuse lobes and an echinulate surface.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries 3–4 stamens. Stamens reach approximately 2.5 mm in length. Filaments are about 1.5 mm long and connate. Anthers are truncate to slightly rounded, approximately 1 mm long and 1–2 mm in diameter, and yellow. Pores are apical and elongate. Pollen is striate. Fruits are red.


Distribution of Amorphophallus discophorus

Amorphophallus discophorus is a local endemic. Researchers have documented it only from the area surrounding Mount Wilis in East Java. Its extremely restricted range makes it one of the most narrowly distributed members of the genus.

This species grows in secondary forest at elevations between 600 and 1,300 m above sea level. In overall morphology, Amorphophallus discophorus closely resembles Amorphophallus annulifer from West Java. The two share many vegetative and floral characters. Nevertheless, one feature immediately separates them: A. annulifer lacks the prominent disc in the male zone entirely. Furthermore, in larger specimens of A. annulifer, the appendix greatly exceeds the spathe in length — a condition not seen in A. discophorus.

Conservation concern is severe for this species. Researchers have not refound A. discophorus in the wild in recent decades. According to Yuzammi et al. (2014), it may already be extinct in its natural habitat. Its extremely restricted range and the absence of recent collections place it among the most critically imperiled aroid species in Java.

The petiole is massive, extending 200–300 cm in length and 13–20 cm in diameter. Its color is greyish to greyish-green. Numerous small, dark spots cover the lower portion, mostly confluent and closely spaced. These become more scattered and elongate upward, transitioning to larger whitish spots with greenish-brown centers. The surface is smooth toward the upper portion but rugose toward the base.

The lamina reaches 300–400 cm in diameter. All rachises carry narrow wings across their full length. Leaflets are elliptic to elongate-elliptic, acuminate to long-acuminate, 20–32 cm long and 6–10 cm wide. Their upper surface is green.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus decus-silvae is long-peduncled. The peduncle extends 105–130 cm in length. This long peduncle, combined with the enormous spadix, gives the species its remarkable vertical stature.

Spathe

The spathe is campanulate, erect, and broadly ovate. It measures (50–) 70–75 cm in length and 45–50 cm in diameter. Externally, the surface is olive-green or greyish-purple with both larger and smaller pale green or dark spots. Internally, the base is purple. The middle section transitions to pale green, and the remainder is purple. Within the base, numerous small, more-or-less ridge-like warts appear, often in confluent arrangements.

The spadix of Amorphophallus decus-silvae is sessile. It measures (50–) 105–120 cm in length. Notably, it equals or exceeds the spathe in length. The female zone is (7–) 15–22 cm long. It measures (5–) 7 cm in diameter at the base and 4–6.5 cm at the top. The shape is subcylindric to conic, and flowers are arranged in widely separated spirals or irregular patterns.

The male zone is strongly obconic, 4.5–7.5 cm long and 5–5.5 cm in diameter at the base. At its top, it broadens to approximately 13 cm in diameter. Flowers in this zone are congested. Furthermore, the appendix is elongate fusiform-conic and subobtuse. It is shallowly folded and measures approximately (40–) 90 cm in length. The surface is minutely rugose. At first the appendix appears reddish, then transitions to dirty yellow or greyish-yellow.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is subglobose to ovate, with a depressed base. In cross-section it is circular, approximately 4 mm in diameter and 3.5 mm tall. Each ovary is bilocular, with one basal ovule per locule. The style is 4–4.5 mm long. It tapers from 1 mm in diameter at the base to 0.5 mm at the apex, forming a tape-ring. The stigma is very small and punctiform, 0.7–0.8 mm in diameter and approximately 0.8 mm tall. It is shallowly bilobed and minutely rugulose.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries 3–6 stamens. Stamens reach 2–2.5 mm in length. Filaments are 0.5–1.3 mm long and either free or very shortly connate at the base. Anthers are 1.2–1.5 mm long and 1.5–3 mm in diameter. They are truncate and subrectangular in cross-section. Pores are oval or rounded, approximately 0.1–0.2 mm long. The connective is flat.


Distribution of Amorphophallus decus-silvae

Amorphophallus decus-silvae is endemic to West Java and Nusa Kambangan island, Indonesia. Within this range, it grows only in restricted and isolated localities. As a result, its overall population size is very limited.

A. decus-silvae produces smaller stigmas (0.7–0.8 mm versus 1–1.4 mm), longer and more slender styles (4–4.5 mm versus 2–3 mm), shorter stamens, and anthers with very obtuse angles and rounded rather than elongated pores. These subtle but consistent differences reliably separate the two species.

Furthermore, A. decus-silvae grows in restricted parts of West Java only. Its rarity in both the field and botanical collections makes every confirmed observation scientifically significant.

The leaflets are oblanceolate and acuminate, with a cuneate base. They measure 8–21 cm long and 2.5–5 cm wide. The upper leaflet surface is moderately glossy and dark green, with an irregularly undulate margin.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus costatus is solitary and short-peduncled. The peduncle measures 14–16.5 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter at the base. It shows a lilac-pink coloration marked with several blackish-green spots that are either elliptic or irregular in shape.

Spathe

The spathe is erect and elongate-triangular, 16–24 cm long and 8–10 cm in diameter. At the base, it is strongly convolute, forming a narrow tube. The limb terminates in a short acuminate tip. Its lower margin is outwardly reflected and subauriculate. Externally, the base is pinkish with brownish veins and a few punctiform blackish spots.

Internally, the lowermost zone of the base is dark maroon. The remaining interior transitions to dirty white or yellowish-white. The outer limb surface is dirty greyish-green with strongly raised dirty brownish-violet main veins. The inner limb surface is entirely glossy maroon and carries a few rounded dirty white spots. At the base, several shallow warts appear in a shortly ridge-like arrangement.

Each ovary is approximately pyriform in shape, about 1.5 mm tall and 1.2–1.4 mm in diameter. The base is white, while the rest of the ovary is blackish-maroon. Each ovary is unilocular. The style is inconspicuous and conic. It is bi- or trefurcate, slightly rugulose, approximately 0.5 mm long and 0.8 mm tall, and blackish-maroon. The stigma is often subapical, 2- or 3-lobed, thin, and verruculate. It carries some longer scabrae, is pale brown, 0.8–1 mm tall and 1 mm in diameter, with conic lobes.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries 2–4 stamens. However, their individual limits are often obscured through fusion into irregular longitudinal ridges. Stamens reach approximately 2 mm in length. Filaments measure about 1.5 mm long, free at the base and connate up to 2/3 of their length. Anthers are subtruncate, rounded or elliptic in cross-section, approximately 0.5 mm long, and carry 1 or 2 thecae. Each theca consists of 1 or 2 locules. Pores are apical and rounded or elliptic. Pollen is irregularly striate to irregularly areolate.

Amorphophallus costatus is endemic to South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Specifically, it occurs at Datar Alei, west of Mount Batu Besar. As of the most recent published data, researchers know it only from this single type locality. Consequently, this makes it one of the most narrowly distributed species in the genus.

Habitat

This species grows along stream margins at an altitude of approximately 400 m above sea level. Its streamside habitat and narrow elevational range suggest a strong dependence on specific microhabitat conditions. Furthermore, this ecological specificity adds to the conservation concern surrounding the species.


Taxonomic Notes

Amorphophallus costatus

Amorphophallus costatus does not resemble any other Amorphophallus species currently known from Kalimantan. Therefore, confusion with sympatric congeners is unlikely. However, researchers have never recollected it since the original description, and the species may show greater morphological variation across its range than currently documented.

It is also worth noting that Amorphophallus rugosus from East Malaysia shows a very similar morphology in its spathe and spadix. Nevertheless, A. rugosus is easily distinguished by its much longer peduncle. This single character effectively separates the two species in the field.

Deep within the semi-open forests of Kalimantan, a striking botanical giant quietly emerges from the forest floor. Amorphophallus borneensis (Engl.) Engl. & Gehrm. is a rare, endemic aroid. Its dramatic proportions and intricate morphology place it among the most compelling members of its genus. Botanists first formally described it in the Pflanzenreich monograph of 1911. Since then, the species continues to captivate researchers and plant enthusiasts for its remarkable floral architecture.


Taxonomic Identity of Amorphophallus borneensis

Amorphophallus borneensis belongs to the family Araceae. Engler originally described it, and Engler & Gehrmann later revised the binomial authority. Its protologue appears in Pflanzenr. 48 (IV.23C) (1911): 79.

Recognized synonyms include:

  • Amorphophallus borneensis var. winkleri Engl.
  • Hydrosme borneensis Engl.

These synonyms reflect historical reclassifications. Eventually, taxonomists consolidated the species under its current accepted name.


Morphological Description

Underground Storage Organ and Leaf

The tuber of Amorphophallus borneensis takes a depressed globose form. It reaches up to approximately 20 cm in diameter and does not produce offset structures. The plant bears a solitary leaf on a robust petiole. That petiole extends up to 200 cm in length and up to 8 cm in diameter. Its surface shows a deep green to near-black background with large, oval, ring-shaped emerald green spots. Those toward the lower section appear slightly elevated and have a crust-like texture.

The lamina reaches up to 200 cm in diameter. Its leaflets are elliptic to elongate-elliptic, typically 15 cm long and up to 10 cm wide, and they terminate in an acuminate tip.

Inflorescence and Peduncle

The inflorescence of Amorphophallus borneensis is solitary. It sits on a long peduncle that ranges from 38 to 110 cm or potentially longer. At the base, the peduncle measures 1.6–4 cm in diameter. The surface is largely smooth, though slight rugosity appears near the base. Furthermore, it displays purplish or blackish-green coloration with large oval or rounded whitish and blackish-green confluent spots. Numerous small brownish-purple dots also appear across the surface. Near the base, the margins of the larger spots rise slightly and appear lichen-like.

Spathe

The spathe is ovate, 21–45 cm long and 19–40 cm in diameter. It carries a single prominent longitudinal fold. The margins roll inward and display a few large sinuses. Externally, the base surface is dull green with a greyish hue. Scattered pale green rounded spots appear there, some with a darker green center, along with small punctiform blackish-green markings.

Internally, the lower portion is maroon. It transitions upward to pale green or whitish with a pale brownish-violet hue. The outer limb surface shows dull dirty reddish-brown to dark brown with small pale or blackish spots. The inner limb surface is a glossy dark brown to dark reddish-brown. At the base, broad and partly flattened ridges bear numerous small, shallow conical warts.

Spadix and Floral Zones

The spadix is sessile and 30–73 cm long. Notably, it exceeds the spathe in length. The female zone is slightly conic, 5–15 cm long and 3–6 cm in diameter at the base. Its flowers are generally well-spaced, though occasional clustering occurs. Between the female and male zones, an irregular transitional zone of approximately 0.5–1 cm sometimes appears. This zone bears occasional female, male, or bisexual flowers.

The male zone is cylindric, 4–8 cm long and 1.5–5 cm in diameter. It sometimes carries a slightly expanded apex and hosts congested flowers. In addition, the appendix is elongate-fusiform and acute, ranging from 20 to 63 cm long and 3–9 cm in diameter. It shows a pale brownish to greyish-brown color. Its verruculate surface bears shallow grooves and depressions. Near the base, a few shallow conical staminodes appear.

Female Flowers

Each ovary is subglobose to depressed-globose. It measures 2.5–4 mm in diameter and 2–2.5 mm tall. The base is white, while the upper portion is brownish-purple. Each ovary is bilocular and holds one basal ovule per locule.

The style measures 3–5 mm long and 1–1.5 mm in diameter. It is brownish-purple and its surface carries flat, broad, shallow verrucae with distinctly conic epidermal cells. The stigma is oval to subtriangular in cross-section, 1.5–3 mm in diameter and 1–2 mm tall. It is shallowly bilobed with a minutely verrucate-echinate surface. Rounded lobes in greyish or yellowish tones separate by a shallow, elongate transversal or Y-shaped groove.

Male Flowers

Each male flower carries 4–6 stamens. Filaments measure 0.5–1 mm long and are basally or entirely connate, and whitish. Anthers reach 2–3 mm in length, with a rectangular cross-section and a truncate apex of approximately 1.5 × 2.5 mm. The connective tissue is brownish or pale greyish-green and slightly sunken. Pores are apical, whitish, and elongate.

Fruit

The fruiting portion is cylindric, up to 35 cm long and 5 cm in diameter. Berries grow in congested clusters. Each berry is globose, approximately 1 × 1 cm, and holds one or two seeds. They turn reddish upon maturity.


Distribution of Amorphophallus borneensis

Amorphophallus borneensis is endemic to Borneo. Specifically, it occurs in the South, East, and Central Kalimantan provinces of Indonesia. Additionally, researchers have reported sightings from East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak). However, those populations remain unverified at the taxonomic level. As a result, the actual range of the species may extend slightly beyond the currently documented area.

Habitat

This species favors semi-open environments. In particular, it grows along logging roadsides or in garden backyards, at elevations between 200 and 350 m above sea level. It does not typically appear in dense, closed-canopy primary forest. This suggests a notable degree of adaptability to disturbed or forest-edge habitats.


Taxonomic Notes

On the island of Borneo, no other Amorphophallus species combines an exceptionally long spadix with a long peduncle. Therefore, A. borneensis stands out as morphologically distinct and relatively straightforward to identify within its range. The source literature further notes that no other Bornean congener shows this character combination. Consequently, the risk of misidentification remains low when both features appear together.

That said, the potential overlap with East Malaysian populations remains an open research question. Future field collections and molecular studies may be necessary to fully resolve the distributional extent of the species.

The tuber is subglobose to somewhat depressed-globose and may reach approximately 10 cm in diameter. Raised areas occur on the surface, and the tuber does not produce offsets. Its coloration ranges from reddish to pinkish tones.

Leaf

A mature plant produces a solitary leaf.

The petiole measures approximately 30–90 cm in length and 1–2 cm in diameter. Its surface is smooth, glossy, and typically dark brown to reddish-brown. Numerous whitish spots decorate the petiole, becoming larger toward the upper portion.

The leaf blade reaches approximately 45–90 cm in diameter. The rachises are generally unwinged, although distal sections may become slightly winged. Certain branches can develop intercalary bulbils.

Leaflets are elongate-elliptic to lanceolate and vary from 6–28 cm long and 2–7 cm wide. Their texture is somewhat leathery, with a slightly glossy dark green upper surface and a paler lower surface marked by brownish veins.

Inflorescence

The inflorescence is solitary and borne on a long peduncle.

The peduncle ranges from 25–62 cm in length and approximately 0.6–1.5 cm in diameter, displaying a coloration similar to the petiole.

Spathe

The spathe stands erect or arches over the appendix. Its overall length ranges from approximately 7–24 cm.

The basal portion forms a strongly convolute tube that is narrowly tubular to somewhat campanulate. The limb is more or less spreading, concave, and occasionally furrowed.

Coloration varies considerably. External surfaces may range from entirely pale green to green with faint purplish flushing or whitish-green near the margins. Internal coloration is equally diverse, ranging from pale whitish-green to dark reddish-purple. Rounded whitish spots frequently occur across the limb.

The lower interior often develops pale pink, dark maroon, or purple wart-like structures that may merge into a densely ridged and corrugated pattern.

Spadix

The sessile spadix is generally shorter than the spathe and measures approximately 5.5–13 cm in length.

Female Zone

The female zone is cylindrical and slightly elongated, measuring approximately 1.5–2.2 cm long and 1–2 cm in diameter.

The ovaries are bright green, slightly depressed, and unilocular. Styles are extremely short or nearly absent. The stigma is subhemispheric with a faint central depression and a finely warted surface.

Male Zone

The male zone is fusiform and measures approximately 1.5–4 cm long and 2.5–7 cm in diameter.

Male flowers consist of four stamens. The anthers are truncate in shape and open through terminal pores. Pollen appears whitish to dirty white.

Appendix

The appendix varies from ovoid-triangular to elongate fusiform-conical. It is thick-walled, white in color, and typically 2.5–7 cm long with a diameter of 1.5–3.5 cm.

The apex is broadly obtuse and may bear staminodes. Some individuals possess diamond-shaped projections, occasionally accompanied by conical elevations separated by deep furrows. These structures gradually diminish toward the upper portions of the appendix.

Fruit

The berries are elliptic-ovate to slightly laterally flattened. Mature fruits become deep red and typically contain a single seed.

Distribution of Amorphophallus beccarii

The first occurrence of Amorphophallus beccarii is restricted to northern and western Sumatra, Indonesia.

The species is considered endemic to the island. Historical records indicate that the type locality was situated in Kayutanam, West Sumatra. Current observations confirm its presence across several suitable habitats within the western Sumatran region.

Habitat

Amorphophallus beccarii inhabits deep, shaded secondary forests. It frequently occurs near rivers, streams, and waterfall systems where humidity remains consistently high.

Known populations occur between approximately 100 and 1500 meters above sea level. These environments provide the moist and sheltered conditions that favor the development of both vegetative and reproductive structures.

Taxonomic Notes

Amorphophallus beccarii represents one of the most taxonomically challenging species within the Sumatran flora. The extraordinary variation observed in spathe shape, coloration, and ornamentation historically led botanists to describe multiple taxa that are now treated as synonyms.

Field studies have revealed no stable morphological character combination capable of consistently separating these forms into distinct species. Consequently, the names listed under synonymy are generally regarded as representing variations within a single, highly polymorphic species.

The species also shares the ability to produce foliar bulbils with Amorphophallus muelleri and Amorphophallus manta. However, the developmental origin of these bulbils differs. In A. beccarii, bulbils arise as modifications of entire branching points and detach only after leaf tissues begin to deteriorate.

This unique combination of vegetative and floral traits makes Amorphophallus beccarii readily distinguishable from other Sumatran species despite its remarkable variability.
